Such has been Harmison's progress over the past few months that he ended the recent series against West Indies as the world's top ranked Test bowler.
The tall Durham paceman has taken 61 Test wickets in 11 matches this year at a cost of only 21 runs each.
One of the major challenges facing him now is to try and make himself a more effective performer in the limited overs game.
He was picked for last year's World Cup but did not play a single match.
And he has only been a regular member of the England one-day team since April.
Batsmen have shown him far less respect with a white ball in his hands but he showed signs of improvement by taking 3-31 and 3-38 in successive games against New Zealand and West Indies during the NatWest Series.
He is able to draw on the experience of Darren Gough, England's most successful one-day bowler, and the technical expertise of coaches Duncan Fletcher and Troy Cooley as he attempts to make himself the complete package.
