Dropped from the England one-day squad for the NatWest Series against West Indies and New Zealand, it has not taken Batty long to regain his place.
He was preferred to Ian Blackwell, who may have greater hitting power but lacks Batty's mobility in the field.
Batty made his debut in Australia during the 2002-03 tour after Jeremy Snape suffered a broken thumb.
He bowled Michael Bevan in Melbourne but figures of 0-55 and 1-65 in two appearances showed he still had plenty to learn.
The 26-year-old was given further opportunities last winter in both the one-day and Test sides and showed himself to be a whole-hearted trier.
The time has now arrived for Batty to show whether he really has what it takes at international level, especially as potential rival Graeme Swann has been chosen to spend the winter at the Academy.
