Australia profiles
Right-arm fast bowler; right-handed batsman

Jason Gillespie
Born: 19/4/75
Team: South Australia
Test debut: v West Indies at Sydney, 1996/97
ODI debut: v Sri Lanka at Colombo, 1996/97

Australia have been hit hard by injuries in recent months and it comes as no surprise that Gillespie was among those sidelined.

The back problem which kept him out of the second Test against Zimbabwe and the recent one-day series in India was the latest in a series of injuries which have dogged him throughout his career.

Bad luck has been a contributing factor as well, with Gillespie suffering a broken leg in a freak on-field collision with captain Steve Waugh during a 1999 Test match in Sri Lanka, which put him out of the home series against India which followed.

When fit, "Dizzy" is a bowler with few equals, possessing the ability to swing the ball and move it both ways off the seam, allied to accuracy which matches that of team-mate Glenn McGrath.

Has taken five or more wickets in an innings on seven occasions, with best figures of 7-37 in the 1997 Ashes Test against England at Headingley.
