Hooper frustrates Surrey
County Championship D1, Old Trafford, day two (close): Surrey 337 v Lancashire 341

Carl Hooper proved a painful thorn in Surrey's side with a wonderful century at Old Trafford.

Surrey, five points behind leaders Sussex, looked sure to dismantle the hosts when they took four middle-order wickets for just 14 runs.

Removed in that time were Stuart Law (67) and Mark Currie (56) as Lancashire descended to 183-6.

But former West Indies skipper Hooper had other ideas, stroking 114 off 147 balls as wickets fell all around him.

It was a massively important stand for us - the last thing we wanted was to concede a big first innings lead
Lancashire's Mark Chilton

He looked to be running out of partners as Azhar Mahmood (4-76) and Ian Salisbury (3-70) moved in to finished off the tail.

But number 11 Gary Keedy withstood 36 balls for a solitary run as Hooper filled his boots at the other end, finally perishing at day's end to Azhar.
