Mark Ramprakash hit 279 as Surrey posted 693 and Martin Bicknell took three early wickets to leave Nottinghamshire in trouble at Whitgift School.

The former England batsman topped his career-best 235 during the morning and Iain Salisbury contributed 65.

Ramprakash's hopes of reaching 300 were dashed when last man Saqlain Mushtaq was caught behind for 50.

But the hosts remained in the ascendant as Bicknell's opening strike left Notts 129-3 in reply at tea.

Kent made a confident reply to Middlesex's first-innings 407 at Lord's, captain David Fulton making 74 not out to lead the visitors to 172-1 at tea.

Earlier, Muttiah Muralitharan finished with 5-103. David Nash was run out for 113.

Division One - Day One

Captain Chris Adams reached three figures just before tea but was beginning to run out of partners as Sussex reached 264-7 against fellow Championship contenders Lancashire.

Darren Maddy and Brad Hodge hit half-centuries to give Leicestershire a solid start against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

But two wickets in an over for Waqar Younis left the Foxes 245-5 at tea after being put in to bat.

Division Two - Day Two

Steve Kirby took two more wickets but Worcestershire looked well-placed on 120-3 at tea, chasing 277 to beat Yorkshire.

Justin Kemp took four wickets and Matt Mason three to bowl the hosts out for 238 at North Marine Road, Craig White hit the only half-century of the match so far.

Adrian Dale hit 66 as Glamorgan replied to Durham's 355 by making 191-4 after two sessions at Sophia Gardens.

Earlier, Robert Croft finished with 6-98 as the visitors improved their overnight score by just two runs for the loss of their last two wickets.

Dominic Cork took his match haul to 10 as bottom club Derbyshire closed in on an innings victory over Hampshire at the Rose Bowl.

After hitting 341 in their second innings - a lead of 198 - the visitors reduced Hants to 109-8 at tea.

Division Two - Day One

Ian Blackwell rescued Somerset with an unbeaten 70, lifting the hosts from 106-4 to 242-5 against Northamptonshire at Taunton
