Surrey crash to defeat
NC1, Guildford: Worcestershire 219-6 beat Surrey 140 all out by 79 runs

Surrey were knocked off the top of division one after crashing to a 79 run defeat to Worcestershire at Guildford.

A weakened Surrey side were punished by Royals captain Ben Smith, who led from the front with an unbeaten 93, with 10 boundaries, to guide Worcestershire to a respectable 219-6.

Smith dug his side out of trouble after James Ormond (3-46) snatched two early wickets to leave the Royals reeling on 40-3.

South African all-rounder Andrew Hall (32) put on 87 with Smith for the fourth wicket and Gareth Batty hit a useful 23 in another half century stand with his skipper.

Kabir Ali then removed the top three Surrey batsmen with just 28 on the board on the way to claiming impressive figures of 4-30.

Matt Mason chipped in with 4-34 and only Surrey captain Adam Hollioake made any substantial contribution, cracking a six and five fours in an enterprising 33.

But he could not stop Surrey stumbling to 140 all out in 37.1 overs.
