County Championship D1, Canterbury, day one: Kent 435-5 (at close) v Surrey
Symonds takes full toll of a short delivery
|
Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds played a dazzling innings of 121 to put a further dent in Surrey's Championship ambitions.
They began the game one point behind Sussex and in dire need of a victory, having played a game more than their title rivals.
But Symonds hit a six and 18 fours in his 123-ball knock after Surrey old boy Michael Carberry and David Fulton had opened proceedings with a stand of 175.
Carberry had a hundred in his sights when he was caught behind off West Indian Franklyn Rose for 92, and Fulton followed in similar fashion soon after for 75.
Symonds was in no mood to waste a good pitch, however, and dominated stands of 71 with Matthew Walker (25) and 106 with Mark Ealham.
He was eventually stumped off leg-spinner Ian Salisbury, leaving Ealham to continue the run spree, and he was 80 not out at the close with Geraint Jones on 26.
