Lewis stuns Derbyshire
County Championship D2, Derby, day one (close): Derbyshire 89 v Gloucestershire 214-6

Jonathan Lewis took his championship wicket-tally to 40 as Gloucestershire took full control on day one at Derby.

Batting first, the hapless hosts were bowled out in 36 overs with Lewis returning 6-48 and Aussie all-rounder Ian Harvey 3-18.

Only four Derbyshire batsmen made double-figure scores and Michael Di Venuto's 17 sadly was the pick of the bunch.

Kiwi batsman Craig Spearman ensured the visitors were not long in establishing a first-innings lead, hitting a fine 85.

But Derbyshire fought back in the evening session to minimise the damage.

Skipper Dominic Cork and Mohammad Ali took two wickets each as Gloucestershire held a 125-run lead with four wickets in hand.

Derbyshire: A I Gait, M J Di Venuto, C W G Bassano, M Kaif, L D Sutton (Wkt), D R Hewson, D G Cork (Capt), G Welch, N R C Dumelow, Mohammad Ali, K J Dean.

Gloucestershire: W P C Weston, C M Spearman (Capt), M G N Windows, C G Taylor, J N Rhodes, I J Harvey, A P R Gidman, M C J Ball, S P Pope (Wkt), J Lewis, A M Smith.
