Harmison in the groove

County Championship D2, Worcester, day one
Durham 110-8; Worcestershire 218

Some Durham fans would have been surprised to see Steve Harmison sharing the new ball with Shoaib Akhtar at the start of the day.

England had released Harmison from the one-day squad to get some match practice and one of the fastest new-ball opening pairs was unleased on Worcestershire.

In the event, Harmison outshone Shoaib, who was playing his first Championship match for Durham, by taking four wickets to the Pakistani's single strike.

Ben Smith produced a fine captain's knock of 73, however, to give the home team a decent score on a sporty wicket.

And after Jon Lewis fell in the first over of Durham's reply, Matt Mason and Mark Harrity cut through the rest of the top order without too much fuss.

With Kemp taking another couple of wickets before a late, late finish at nearly 1930 BST, the day most certainly ended in favour of the home side.

Worcestershire: S D Peters, A Singh, Kadeer Ali, B F Smith (Capt), J M Kemp, S C Moore, G J Batty, S J Adshead (Wkt), M S Mason, M A Harrity, M Hayward.

Durham: J J B Lewis (Capt), M A Gough, M L Love, G J Muchall, G J Pratt, V J Wells, P Mustard (Wkt), L E Plunkett, Shoaib Akhtar, N C Phillips, S J Harmison.
