Ramprakash spares blushes
Day one, The Oval: Loughborough UCCE 206 v Surrey 176-4

Mark Ramprakash scored an unbeaten 92 but Surrey had it far from their own way on day one.

Led by Jimmy Ormond, the reigning champions bowled the students out for 206 but were made to work hard in their reply.

Mark Butcher's 45 complemented Rampraksh's assured innings, but Graham Thorpe, Nadeem Shahid and Ali Brown all fell very cheaply.

Thorpe, expected to return to the England line-up this summer, was bowled by 19-year-old Ryan Cummins - one of two strikes for the seamer.

Rob White and Chris Nash earlier made half-centuries for Loughborough, but six wickets to Ormond ensured the damage was limited.

Surrey: Azhar Mahmood, JN Batty, MP Bicknell, AD Brown, MA Butcher, R Clarke, AJ Hollioake (capt), J Ormond, MR Ramprakash, N Shahid, GP Thorpe.

Loughborough UCCE: JHK Adams (capt), JE Anyon, V Atri, RAG Cummins, JD Francis, L Goddard, RE King, P Lewis, CD Nash, ZK Sharif, RA White.
