Graham Thorpe fired England selectors a reminder with a century as Surrey squeezed into the quarter-finals of the C&G Trophy.
Somerset's valiant run-chase ran out of steam in the final over as Surrey prevailed by six runs.
Thorpe's unbeaten 102 propelled Surrey to 281-6 from their 50 overs after Somerset won the toss and elected to field.
Surrey were in some bother on 169-9 at one stage, but fought back thanks to an unbroken 112-run stand between Thorpe and keeper Jonathan Batty (55 off 46 balls).
Somerset's looked out of contention when Marcus Trescothick's dismissal for 17 reduced them to 51-3 early on.
But a rapid 83 to Keith Parsons, who added 97 runs with Michael Burns for the fourth wicket, paved the way for a thrilling finale.
