Defending champions Surrey continued to set the pace at the top of the table as James Ormond bowled them to victory with 5-82.
Adam Hollioake declared at their overnight total, leaving Essex to try and bat through the day for a draw with a victory target of 506 way out of reach.
Ormond was soon among the wickets as Will Jefferson and Paul Grayson were sent back to the pavilion with only 44 on the board.
The crucial scalp of former Zimbabwe Test star Andy Flower fell, however, to Azhar Mahmood who had him caught behind by Jon Batty for six.
Darren Robinson made 41 but the most impressive batting came from Aftab Habib and James Foster, who put on 119 for the fifth wicket.
They were finally separated when Ormond had Foster lbw for 42 and he also removed Habib for 61, with Batty's assistance, before the spinners mopped up the Essex tail.
