Cowan makes Academy pay
Tour match, Sydney, day 2/4: England Academy 342, NSW Institute of Sport 398-7 (at close)

Chris Read's 180 on day one of this match became a distant memory as the New South Wales youngsters eased past the Academy on day two at the Coogee Oval.

Left-hander Ed Cowan topscored with 87 for the Sydney-based outfit while Stephen Phillips contributed a more than useful 68.

With three other batsmen adding scores in the 40s, the Institute finished with a lead of 56 and they still have three wickets in hand.

Monty Panesar and Kabir Ali each took two wickets for an Academy bowling outfit who were somewhat below par.

On day one, former England wicket-keeper Read had blazed away largely unsupported by his colleagues, with no other Academy batsman able to reach 40.
