Drakes back in the fold
Vasbert Drakes takes a break by the scoreboard
Drakes last played for the West Indies in 1995
All-rounder Vasbert Drakes has been restored to the West Indies side after a seven-year absence.

The 33-year-old Barbadian has been named as a replacement for injured fast bowler Cameron Cuffy after returning to West Indian domestic cricket only a month ago.

Cuffy is absent following a knee operation that took place eight weeks ago with the selectors concerned that he has not completed the necessary rehabilitation.

The West Indies have frequently refused to pick players who have plyed their trade abroad rather than in the Caribbean.

Fast bowlers Nixon McLean and Franklyn Rose both played in South Africa in 2001-02 along with former captain Jimmy Adams.

Previously, the West Indian authorities had said that a player had to play in both the Caribbean's first-class and one-day competitions to be eligible for the team.

However, they have no changed that requirement allowing Drakes to play after appearing for Barbados in the one-day Red Stripe Bowl.

Drakes last played for the West Indies against Australia in 1995 in four one-day internationals.

After failing to establish himself, the fast bowler moved abroad to play in county cricket for Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire.

He has also appeared in South African domestic cricket for Border for the past five seasons.
