England squad profiles
Nasser Hussain and Alec Stewart
Will England reclaim the trophy they won in 2000?
BBC Sport Online's player-by-player guide to the England one-day squad.

Nasser Hussain

Nasser Hussain
Team: Essex
Born: 28.3.68
Right-hand batsman

Led England to victory over Zimbabwe two years ago in the inaugural NatWest Series final, but missed last year's competition because of injury.

Hussain has been in prolific one-day form for Essex this summer, but will have to give up his preferred opening berth, with Nick Knight and Marcus Trescothick established at the top of the order for England.

Made his one-day debut for England against Pakistan 13 years ago but is still looking for his first century.

Paul Collingwood

Paul Collingwood
Team: Durham
Born: 26.5.76
Right-hand batsman; right arm medium pace bowler

Looked out of his depth against Australia and Pakistan last summer, but has come on in leaps and bounds since then.

Collingwood was named Man of the Match for his 71 not out against India in Cuttack last winter, and picked up another award on the second leg of the tour by taking four for 38 against New Zealand in Napier.

Has his sights on a place in the squad for next year's World Cup but has recently been troubled by a knee problem which has kept him out of Durham's team.

Andrew Flintoff

Andrew Flintoff
Team: Lancashire
Born: 6.12.77
Right hand batsman; right arm fast bowler

Few will forget the sight of a bare-chested Flintoff racing around the outfield in sheer delight in Bombay after taking the wicket which secured a 3-3 draw in the one-day series in India.

It was a clear demonstration of his commitment to the cause, and his advance over the winter in both Test and one-day cricket was good news for England.

An explosive hitter, as he showed with an innings of 84 off 60 balls against Pakistan two years ago, he has also been entrusted to bowl at the death by skipper Nasser Hussain.

Ashley Giles

Ashley Giles
Team: Warwickshire
Born: 19.3.73
Right-hand batsman; slow left-arm spin bowler

Although undoubtedly England's number one spin bowler in Test cricket, Giles' place in the one-day line-up is far less secure with Jeremy Snape also in the squad.

He produced his finest performance to date by bowling England to a dramatic two-run win over India in Delhi with figures of five for 57.

But he has yet to do himself justice with the bat at international level despite having a one-day hundred for Warwickshire to his credit.

Darren Gough

Darren Gough
Team: Yorkshire
Born: 18.9.70
Right arm fast bowler; right hand batsman

The sight of Gough wearing an England shirt again will give both players and supporters a lift and he is a key figure if they are to mount a strong challenge in next year's World Cup.

Took 21 one-day wickets over the winter but suffered a knee injury in New Zealand which required two operations to sort out.

His selection for the NatWest Series without any first team cricket behind him this summer underlines his importance, but also represents a gamble by the selectors.

Matthew Hoggard

Matthew Hoggard
Team: Yorkshire
Born: 31.12.76
Right arm fast medium bowler; right hand batsman

Hoggard was handed the responsibility of spearheading the England attack in last year's one-day series in Zimbabwe and did so superbly as they recorded a 5-0 whitewash.

Continues to develop at international level, although his policy of pitching the ball up in search of swing can sometimes result in rought treatment from batsmen.

Like Yorkshire teammate Darren Gough, he possesses a deadly yorker which is especially effective against left-handers.

Ronnie Irani

Ronnie Irani
Team: Essex
Born: 26.10.71
Right hand batsman; right arm medium pace bowler

No-one could argue that Irani deserved his recall following a series of brilliant one-day performances for Essex this summer.

Irani has been in magnificent form with bat and ball to help the county reach the B&H Cup final, but this may be his last opportunity to prove he can be effective against international opposition.

It is asking a lot of a player whose last one-day international appearance was five years ago, but he does not lack self-belief.

James Kirtley

James Kirtley
Team: Sussex
Born: 10.1.75
Right arm fast medium bowler; right hand batsman

One of the most consistent new ball bowlers on the county circuit, Kirtley was rewarded with an England call for last year's one-day series in Zimbabwe.

It proved a difficult experience as his bowling action was called into question by match referee Colonel Naushad Ali.

But Kirtley has worked hard to iron out any problems and a clutch of wickets for Sussex, plus Andy Caddick's absence because of a side strain, have earned him another opportunity.

Nick Knight

Nick Knight
Team: Warwickshire
Born: 28.11.69
Left hand batsman

Knight may feel he could still do a job for England in Test cricket, but it appears that the selectors now regard him as a one-day specialist.

Man of the Series in Zimbabwe last year, he followed that with an innings of 105 against India in Delhi - his fourth century in a one-day international.

Although still capable of dashing strokeplay when required, Knight has now taken on the anchor role and should reach 3,000 one-day runs for England this summer.

Jeremy Snape

Jeremy Snape
Team: Gloucestershire
Born: 27.4.73
Right arm off-spin bowler; right hand batsman

Snape impressed the selectors with his well-flighted bowling, useful runs and effervescent approach in the field after being called into the one-day squad for last year's tour to Zimbabwe.

And they have kept faith with him, even though he recently lost his place in the Gloucestershire team.

Snape cannot afford to under-perform against India and Sri Lanka, however, if he wants to hang onto his place for next year's World Cup in South Africa.

Alec Stewart

Alec Stewart
Team: Surrey
Born: 8.4.63
Right hand batsman; wicket-keeper

England's oldest player, Stewart's appetite for the game shows no sign of diminishing after a welcome winter off.

James Foster's broken arm enabled Stewart to reclaim his England place and it appears certain that he will go to the World Cup next February, barring injuries.

Was in brilliant form with the bat during the 2000 NatWest Series, scoring 101 and 100 not out in successive innings, followed by 97 in the final against Zimbabwe.

Graham Thorpe

Graham Thorpe
Team: Surrey
Born: 1.8.69
Left hand batsman

Happy to be 'one of the boys' after skippering England in three one-dayers against Sri Lanka last year in Nasser Hussain's absence and losing them all.

Thorpe can be relied on to keep the scoreboard ticking over with ones and twos, and such is his ability that it is surprising that 89 against Holland during the 1996 World Cup remains his best one-day score for England.

Marcus Trescothick

Marcus Trescothick
Team: Somerset
Born: 25.12.75
Left hand batsman; right arm medium pace bowler

Called into the squad as a replacement against West Indies and Zimbabwe two years ago, Trescothick did not waste the opportunity.

Made a half century in his first appearance and has never looked back since then, establishing himself a first-choice opener in both Test and one-day cricket and heir apparent to skipper Nasser Hussain.

Hit 137 against Pakistan during last year's NatWest Series and followed that with 121 off 109 balls against India in Calcutta during the winter.

Alex Tudor

Alex Tudor
Team: Surrey
Born: 23.10.77
Right arm fast bowler; right hand batsman

Previously seen as a Test match bowler, Tudor forced his way into the squad as a player in form with a whole-hearted performance against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford.

Has proved effective in one-day cricket for Surrey with a strike rate of under 30, and took three for 28 in the county's B&H Cup final victory over Gloucestershire last season.

England will also be hoping he will chip in with some useful runs if the top order fails.

Michael Vaughan

Michael Vaughan
Team: Yorkshire
Born: 29.10.74
Right hand batsman; right arm off break bowler

It says much for Vaughan's attitude that he has managed to keep his place in the one-day squad despite managing only seven runs in four innings during the 2001 NatWest Series against Australia and Pakistan.

Normally an opener, he has had to adjust to a middle order role in the shorter form of the game.

Scores of 63 against India and 59 against New Zealand in the winter one-dayers suggest he is developing on the right lines.
