Commonwealth Games 2010: Harry slams 'shambolic' Games

David Harry
Harry said the pictures in the media were a due reflection of the conditions

The chef de mission of Guernsey's Commonwealth Games team has described conditions in Delhi as "shambolic".

David Harry went out to India ahead of the island's competitors to help prepare the team and criticised the state of the Games village.

"The concerns were well-founded, when we got there things were quite shambolic," said Harry.

"The pictures that people saw were entirely true, but we managed to get things sorted before the team arrived."

The build-up to the Games, which finished last week, was marred by concerns over conditions in the athletes' village, stadium safety and security.

"We needed to make sure that our athletes had confidence that what they would get when they arrived wasn't what they were seeing on the TV and in the press," Harry added.

"So, it was necessary to work very hard and long hours, cleaning things to our standard rather than the standard which seemed to be acceptable to the housekeeping staff in the Games village."
