Guernsey at Delhi 2010: Day Nine round-up

Alison Merrien
Merrien, the world number 2, struggled with inconsistent form

Alison Merrien's dream of a medal at the Commonwealth Games ended as the island's best woman bowls player failed to reach the singles knockout stages.

Ahead of the last day of must win games she blamed her inconsistent form on the greens in Delhi and a bit of bad luck.

The world number two said she always found it difficult at the Games.

She said: "Every Commonwealth I've been to the situation is the same, the greens just aren't played on enough to warrant having a good competition."

Merrien added: "A lot of luck is involved and it's either with you or it's not."

Ahead of the last day of competition, Merrien had won three of her seven matches, but one of her three remaining fixtures was against world number one Val Smith.

Merrien lost that match in straight sets and with it her chances of qualifying for the semi finals.
