Natalie du Toit claims Commonwealth swimming gold

Medalists Annabelle Williams of Australia (Silver), Natalie Du Toit of South Africa (Gold) and Stephanie Millward of England (Bronze)

Du Toit continues Games gold run

South African Paralympic star Natalie du Toit won her fifth Commonwealth Games gold medal with a narrow victory in her 50m freestyle event.

The 11-time Paralympic champion, who competed in the open water event at the Beijing Olympics, finished strongly to win in a time of 29.17 seconds.

Australia's Annabelle Williams, who led at the turn, was second in 29.42

England's Stephanie Millward, who was a talented able-bodied swimmer before being diagnosed with MS, took bronze.

The 29-year-old, who hails from Wiltshire, but trains in Swansea, said she had to work hard to make up for a poor start.

She said: "When you consider the start a bronze medal is a great result and gives me confidence for my remaining events."

But although Du Toit, who announced in August that she would retire after the 2012 London Paralympics, is stronger over longer distances, she used all her experience to claim gold.

"I definitely want to make an impression, seeing as it's my last Commonwealth Games, so I want to make it count," said the South African, who lost part of her leg in a motorbike accident in 2001.

Du Toit has further chances for gold in the 100m freestyle on Thursday and the 100m butterfly on Saturday.

The Para Sport swimming programme in Delhi features six events - three each for men and women with the men going in the S9 50m freestyle on Wednesday, followed by the S8 100m freestyle (Friday) and S10 100m freestyle (Saturday).
