Commonwealth Games day five review

Caitlin McClatchey is the first Scotswoman to win two individual golds
Scottish duo Caitlin McClatchey and Gregor Tait and England's Chris Cook all won Commonwealth golds in the pool.

McClatchey won the 400m freestyle, ahead of Jo Jackson while Tait took gold in the 200m individual medley.

Cook edged out Darren Mew in the 50m breaststroke while England's Liam Tancock won the 100m backstroke final.

In athletics, Jamaica's Asafa Powell took gold in the men's 100m final while England's Peter Nicol claimed his third Commonwealth squash gold medal.

SWIMMING

Chris Cook added the 50m breaststroke title to his 100m title, leading home compatriot Darren Mew in 28.13 seconds.

James Gibson, who won gold in the event in Manchester, finished fourth while Scottish duo Ross Clark and Chris Jones were seventh and eighth.

Liam Tancock was equally impressive, leading from start to finish to win the 100m backstroke ahead of Australia's Matt Welsh with Scotland's Gregor Tait taking third.

But Tait captured his second gold when he triumphed in the 200 metres individual medley.

Wales' David Roberts claimed bronze in the 100m multi-disability freestyle for behind Australia's Matthew Cowdrey and Canada's Benoit Huot.

In the 50m freestyle, England's double Commonwealth champion Mark Foster was third in his semi-final on 22.61 seconds behind Australia's Brett Hawke, who set a new Games record of 22.30.

In the heats for the men's 1500m freestyle, Wales' David Davies qualified fastest ahead of Troy Prinsloo of South Africa and Travis Nederpelt of Australia.

Scotland's Caitlin McClatchey followed up her 200m freestyle victory with gold in the 400m freestyle in 4:07.69, ahead of England's Jo Jackson.

Melanie Marshall set a personal best of 2:10.87 to win silver in the 200m backstroke, just behind Australia's Jo Fargus, who swam for England at the Games in Manchester, with Katy Sexton in eighth.

Marshall grabbed a second silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay along with Rosalind Brett, Amy Smith and Francesca Halsall behind the Australians.

Australian Leisel Jones set a new world record in the women's 100m breaststroke, winning in a time of 1:05.09 - seven-tenths of a second inside the old mark - while Scotland's Kirsty Balfour won bronze in a new British record of 1:07.83.

ATHLETICS

World record holder Asafa Powell was pushed hard by Nigeria's Soji Fasuba before winning the men's 100m final in 10.03 seconds.

The Jamaican claimed his first major international title ahead of Fasuba and Marc Burns of Trinidad with England's Marlon Devonish back in eighth.

Mark Lewis-Francis was controversially disqualified from the semi-finals after a false start.

Dean Macey extended his lead in the decathlon after clearing 2.08m in the high jump and finishing third in his 400m heat and is 187 points ahead of Australia's Jason Dudley at the end of the first day.

Macey was fifth in the 100m and second in the long jump but threw 6cm further than his previous best to win the shot put and followed that up with success in the high jump.

Guernsey's Dale Garland is in fourth, just 44 points off a medal.

Botswana's California Molefe was fastest in the men's 400m heats in 45.36 while England duo Martyn Rooney and Robert Tobin both advanced.

In the men's high jump, England's Martyn Bernard, Thomas Parsons and Ben Challenger and Wales' Robert Mitchell all reached the final.

England's Christine Ohuruogu qualified quickest for the women's 400m final, winning her semi-final in 50.57 seconds, ahead of world and Olympic champion Tonique Williams-Darling of the Bahamas.

Wales' Hayley Tullett ran 4:09.59 to qualify fastest for the final of the women's 1500m where she will be joined by England's Lisa Dobriskey and Helen Clitheroe and Scotland's Hayley Ovens.

England's Lorraine Shaw won bronze in the women's hammer with a season's best of 66m while there was also a bronze for Wales' Beverley Jones in the 100m T37 race.

BADMINTON

In the final of the mixed team event, defending champions England lost 3-1 to Malaysia.

Although Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms gave England a winning start in the mixed doubles, Malaysia recovered to win both singles matches and the men's doubles to clinch the victory.

India beat New Zealand 3-1 in the bronze-medal match.

HOCKEY

England's women thrashed Barbados 10-0 to join Australia and New Zealand in the semi-finals while there were also wins for Malaysia and India.

Scotland claimed their first win of the tournament, beating Canada 2-1 with goals from Rhona Simpson and Catriona Semple but they could not reach the last four after earlier defeats to England and New Zealand.

Scotland's men suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to New Zealand, while India beat Trinidad 10-1.

GYMNASTICS

The first day of the men's and women's apparatus finals saw England winning two golds and a silver.

England's Imogen Cairns won the women's vault title while Louis Smith took the men's pommel event and Shavahn Church won silver in the women's uneven bars.

Scotland's Steve Frew, the defending champion, finished out of the medals in the rings event.

SHOOTING

It was a busy day in the shooting arena with five gold medals up for grabs.

In the men's 50m rifle three positions, India (Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang) won gold with the English pair of Jason Burrage and Chris Hector taking bronze.

India (Samaresh Jung and Jaspal Rana) also won the 25m centre-fire pistol pairs from England's Peter Flippant and Simon Lucas.

In the men's skeet pairs, Cyprus beat England's Clive Bramley and Richard Brickell to gold with Australia third.

India also claimed a 1-2 in the women's 10m air rifle, while Australia beat Cyprus and England (Pinky Le Grelle and Elen Little) to the women's skeet pairs title.

BOXING

The men's preliminary bouts continued with the last eight in the flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight and middleweight divisions all decided.

England's Don Broadhurst will meet Northern Ireland's Ryan Lindberg in the flyweight quarter-finals while Wales' Matthew Edmonds (bantamweight) and England's Frankie Gavin (lightweight) also advanced.

In the featherweight, there were wins for Wales' Darren Edwards, Scotland's Jason Hastie and England's Stephen Smith while James Degale (England), Craig McEwan (Scotland) and Eamonn O'Kane (NI) all went through in the middleweight division.

ROUND-UP

England's Peter Nicol won his third Commonwealth squash title when he beat Australian David Palmer 9-5 10-8 4-9 9-2 in the singles final.

Nicol won singles gold in 1998 for Scotland before his switch to represent England, for whom he won doubles gold in Manchester.

Earlier, in an all-English encounter, Lee Beachill defeated Nick Matthew 9-3 9-7 9-3 for bronze.

In the women's gold medal match, Australia's Natalie Grinham beat her sister Rachael 2-9 9-6 9-1 9-6 while world number one Nicol David of Malaysia took bronze.

Northern Ireland missed out on gold in the lawn bowls when the men's triples were beaten 2-0 by Australia in the final.

South Africa beat England 5-7 11-2 2-1 in the men's third-place match but England beat Jersey 11-3 9-4 in the women's bronze medal play-off.

England secured their place in the semi-finals of the men's basketball after a 95-53 success over South Africa with Andrew Sullivan top-scoring on 23 points while Scotland were beaten 91-83 by Nigeria to miss out on the last four.

The England netball team trounced St Vincent and Grenadines 78-18 while Wales lost 74-21 to Jamaica.
