Tribute to 'The Greatest'
Muhammad Ali prepares for a defence of his heavyweight crown in 1965
The Greatest: Muhammad Ali in 1965
Muhammad Ali, one of the most famous sportsmen of the 20th century, turns 60 on Thursday and BBC Radio Five Live have broadcast a special documentary on Monday to mark the occasion.

'The Greatest' explores Ali's life through the memories, human interest stories and anecdotes of others who have been personally affected by his personality, career and actions.

John Inverdale presents this look at a man who had impact on millions of people worldwide.

From his early days through to his first title fight in 1964 and his refusal to fight in Vietnam because of his religious beliefs, Ali was a role model for many.

Boxing greats

Included in the programme is a version of the song "Stand By Me", sung by Sam Cooke and Ali.

Among those interviewed are Welsh pop singer Tom Jones, who sparred with Ali in the 1960s, Ernie Terrell and Ali's lawyer and friend John J Hooker.

Ali's daughter Hana Ali features in the show, as does his trainer and close friend Angelo Dundee.

Jazzy B talks about Ali's influence on the young black rap artists of today - other contributors from the world of music include Ronnie Wood, BB King and Berry Gordy.

Meanwhile, Richard Harris, Rod Steiger, Billy Connolly and Billy Crystal reveal the influence Ali had on them, as does author Maya Angelou.

And boxing greats Henry Cooper, Lennox Lewis and George Foreman also pay their tributes.
