Durham fighter Travis Dickinson makes Prizefighter bid

Durham light-heavyweight Travis Dickinson believes he is well prepared to win his division in Saturday's Prizefighter event in London.

The tournament at the London Olympia pits the fighter against such opponents as ex-British super-middleweight champion Tony Dodson and Menay Edwards.

"I'm not taking anyone lightly," Dickinson said.

"The three round format will suit me and I've been working on starting fast but I start fast anyway."

The former Birtley ABC amateur won 42 of 48 contests, twice lifted the junior ABA title and was British amateur champion before turning professional, where he is undefeated in seven fights.

"It's going well and I'm pleased to be undefeated," Dickinson added.

"I could have done with being a bit more active, but that's been down to injuries really.

I'm really enjoying it, we've been concentrating on fast work, so it's been a bit different from preparing for a normal six round fight

"I'm hoping to fight more often now and work towards a title."

Older brother Jon-Lewis, also a former Birtley ABC amateur, won the cruiserweight version of the competition in April last year and has been working with Travis ahead of the event.

"We've been sparring," Dickinson continued.

"Jon's been coming to the gym, helping me prepare, and he's been giving me some advice and tips.

"I'm really enjoying it, we've been concentrating on fast work, so it's been a bit different from preparing for a normal six round fight.

"There are also a lot of good amateurs down at Birtley who I've been sparring with for speed too.

"Seeing Jon-Lewis win Prizefighter was great, and I just want to go as far as I can."

Dickinson was talking to John Hannen.
