Boxer Nick Blackwell makes history with title victory

Nick Blackwell
Blackwell has now won all seven of his professional bouts

Nick Blackwell became the youngest English title holder with a points decision against Harry Matthews to land the middleweight belt.

The 20-year-old from Trowbridge maintained his 100% winning record as a professional with victory in Bath.

'Bang Bang' downed the 22-year-old 'Pocklington Rocket' from York with a right hook in the sixth round and won the contest on a unanimous decision.

The title was vacant after Darren McDermott was forced to retire.

It was the sixth successive fight Blackwell has won on points since turning pro in June 2009, when he notched a knockout in the first of his seven bouts.

Blackwell's fellow Contender Gym fighters Liam Richards and Dan Carr also secured wins on Saturday's card.

Super-featherweight Richards beat Manchester's Abdul Rashid and lightweight Carr saw off the threat of Swansea's Craig Dyer.

Aaron Fox, another Trowbridge-based boxer, lost to Birmingham's Jason Nesbitt but lasted the distance despite breaking his jaw in two places in the opening round.

Northampton super-bantamweight Nathan Reeve was also successful, beating Walsall's Delroy Spence, while Swindon's Kelvin Young saw off super-middleweight rival Martin Robins of Bristol on points in a close contest.

Nick Blackwell will be on the Points West sofa on BBC One from 1830 GMT on Monday.
