Champion Sergio Martinez knocks out Paul Williams

Martinez gains revenge for his defeat by Williams last year

WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez retained his title after knocking out American Paul Williams in the second round of their rematch.

The meeting was a repeat of their fight in December when they traded first-round knockdowns and went 12 rounds before Williams won by split decision.

Williams was looking to land his own left hook but walked into a left which landed flush and knocked him out.

"He left me a lot of room to come in and hit him," admitted Martinez.

Argentina's Martinez won the WBC and WBO belts in April after defeating American Kelly Pavlik, although only the former was on the line in in Atlantic City.

That was one of the great knockout punches of another great fighter I've ever seen

Promoter Lou DiBella

The decision for Williams in their previous bout in 2009 was questioned by some, and Martinez was determined not to let this one go to the scorecards.

"I didn't want the judges to rob me this time," stated the 35-year-old Martinez.

Promoter Lou DiBella added: "That was one of the great knockout punches I've ever seen.

"Williams [who needed ringside treatment following the KO] is a brilliant fighter, but Martinez's speed and angles, that punch - that punch would have knocked anyone out."

Martinez could now face a potential super-fight against pound-for-pound greats Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr.

For 29-year-old Williams it was only the second defeat of a 41 fight career.
