Rendall Munroe proud of display in world title fight

Rendall Munroe
It was a great occasion; it was a boyhood dream to fight for a world title and it was a great honour

Rendall Munroe says he gave everything in his world title fight with Toshiaki Nishioka and is proud of his efforts.

The Leicester boxer, 30, suffered only his second career defeat in the WBC super-bantamweight fight in Japan on Sunday, losing on points.

"I did everything I was asked to do," he told BBC East Midlands Today. "I did myself proud and gave 120%.

"There was nothing more I could do. He was the better guy on the night. He had the speed over me."

Nishioka, 34, rocked Munroe in the fifth, seventh and 10th as he proved too classy for the British fighter - who gave a brave display.

But Munroe, who trains in Derby, was not downhearted and said he will soon be focusing on his next fight.

He said: "I know Jason [trainer Jason Shinfield] says he doesn't want me in the gym for a while but trust me I'll be back there.

"It was a great occasion, it was a boyhood dream to fight for a world title and it was a great honour."
