Bristol boxer Lee Haskins is counting down the days to the "biggest fight of my career".

The 26-year-old British and Commonwealth super-flyweight title holder is heading for a showdown on the Italian island of Sardinia.

Haskins will be trying to take Andrea Sarritzu's European flyweight crown in Cagliari in September.

He told BBC Radio Bristol: "He is a very durable fighter but he's 34 now. I need to take that belt from him."

Haskins, a former junior ABA champion, was last in the ring when he beat Commonwealth champion Don Broadhurst in December.

He is undaunted by the prospect of facing the dogged Italian on home territory: "I'm not going to leave anything up to the judges or the ref, I'm going to win it clearly.

"This is the biggest fight of my career. I want to bring back that belt then go for a world title - I'm ready for it."

Sarritzu has won 31 of his 39 professional fights, including 12 by knockouts.

He successfully defended his title in May with a comprehensive points win over Frenchman Alain Bonnel.

"He does have a good record but he's fought a lot of people a number of times so he's been protected too much. I think he's going to be the slower guy in there," he said.

The big bout takes place on either 17 or 18 September and Haskins is determined to be at the peak of fitness.

"I've never really trained so long for a fight. I've been working flat out for five weeks already and I have another 10 weeks left. I'm going to be in absolutely fantastic shape and can't wait to get it over and done with," he said.

"By the time the fight comes I'll be in the best shape ever."
