Martin has enjoyed most of his success at the 70kg weight category
Young boxer Ryan Martin encountered a fearsome opponent on the morning he was due to represent England - going face-to-face with his GCSE maths exam.
The 16-year-old from Swindon will be boxing in Sheffield at the GB Junior Three Nations tournament.
His school arranged for him to sit the test after his first weigh-in and just before his bout on Friday.
Martin, who has been boxing since he was six, hopes to follow in the footsteps of his fellow Walcot club member, Commonwealth gold medallist Jamie Cox.
He has already won the NACYP and Royal Navy Junior ABA titles this season and has his sights set on participation in the 2012 London Olympics.
He sat the GCSE alone in a Sheffield sports hall, but another exam conundrum has presented itself.
On 20 June, he hopes to join the GB squad for the European Junior Championships - a day before he is scheduled to sit a science paper.
