DeGale loss will help me, says Sam Horton

Super-middleweight fighter Sam Horton says his bruising five-round defeat by James DeGale last month will make him a better boxer.

The 24-year-old from Stourbridge was knocked out by the 2008 Olympic Champion at Upton Park but is now determined to return stronger.

"The fight re-birthed the boxing life back into me," Horton told BBC WM.

"The way I trained for the fight should be the way I train for every fight. I take my hat off to James though."

Victory gave DeGale the WBA International super-middleweight championship and Horton thinks the 24-year-old Londoner has only just started his collection of titles.

His hand speed was unbelievable. They way he changed his stance around was mind-boggling. I hope he goes on to be world champion

"The ability he's got was something new to me and I've been in boxing 15 years. It was out of this world," he said.

Horton defied DeGale's pre-fight prediction that the West Midlands man would be beaten in four rounds and that pleased him.

"I was over the moon that I managed to get into the fifth round but I think my trainers did the right thing throwing in the towel," Horton said.

"When he was throwing those combinations they were so fast I couldn't see them. He's a switch hitter and it was difficult to deal with. He can change in a blink of an eye.

"I could deal with James's shots when they were single shots but his hand speed was unbelievable.

"They way he changed his stance around was mind-boggling. I hope he goes on to be world champion."
