Jamie McDonnell staged a remarkable comeback to defeat British bantamweight champion Ian Napa, also clinching the vacant commonwealth belt on Friday.

A clash of heads in the first resulted in a nasty cut above the left eye of McDonnell with Napa having the better of the early rounds in Brentwood.

Napa rocked McDonnell in the eighth with a fierce right but the Doncaster man came back into the fight late on.

And the late work was enough to earn a split decision victory from the judges.

The three judges scored the fight 115-114, 117-112, 114-115 with many ringside disputing the decision.

"I'm absolutely over the moon to win the fight, all the training over Christmas has paid off," said McDonnell.

"This means everything to me and opens up so many doors for me. I want a European title fight soon."

McDonnell, 23, took his record to 13 victories, two defeats and one draw from his 16 fights while Zimbabwe-born Napa suffered the eighth defeat of his 27-fight career.
