Mathews hoping to reignite career

Liverpool super-featherweight Derry Mathews is promising to beat Stoke's Scott Lawton on 13 November.

Mathews, 26, has lost three of his last four fights by stoppages and is facing serial British title challenger Lawton, 33, on his home patch.

"He's been in with Amir Khan and Jon Thaxton, he's been in with the best," Mathews told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"He's the golden boy of Stoke and the golden boy of Liverpool is coming to take it away from him."

Mathews is a former WBU World Champion at featherweight, whereas Lawton is moving down to super-featherweight from lightweight.

And he is adamant it is the kind of fight he needs at this stage of his career and is philosophical when hearing suggestions he could have been further along in the sport had he chosen his previous opponents more carefully.

"I'm here to fight the best," Mathews said. "There's people who are world champions who shouldn't be world champions.

"As I've said before, no one can take it away from me, I've never turned down a fight.

"I want to fight the best, in this game you get nowhere unless you beat the best. To be the best you've got to beat the best and that's what I plan on doing."

Mathews has recently signed a promotional contract with Ricky Hatton.

And he says his new promoter aims to lead him to the Lonsdale belt.

"He's going to guide me on to winning the British Title and maybe go on to bigger and better things," he said.

Mathews is hoping his journey begins against Scott Lawton at Fenton Manor Sports Complex on 13 November.
