Murray reclaims lightweight title

John Murray reclaimed the British lightweight title with a convincing victory over fellow Briton Jon Thaxton in Altrincham on Saturday.

The fight was stopped in the fourth round after Murray had rocked Thaxton with a series of right-hand blows.

Thaxton, 35, began energetically but Murray, 11 years his opponent's junior, put up a solid defence and countered.

And Murray's accurate punches soon took their toll on Thaxton who is now set to call an end to his 17-year career.

Thaxton's corner complained bitterly that the fight was halted prematurely and having said before Saturday that this would be his last bout, the 35-year-old refused to rule out a return.

Murray is now unbeaten in 28 fights while for Thaxton it was the 11th defeat of his 45-fight career.

Mancunian Murray will now likely have a shot at European champion Anthony Mezaache but also has his eyes set on WBO champion Michael Katsidis.

"Jon was the only person in Britain that could challenge me but it's time for me to move on," said Murray.

"Katsidis is on my radar and that's a fight I fancy."
