Edwards could fight for Euro belt

Stoke-on-Trent boxer Chris Edwards could be on the verge of fighting for the vacant European flyweight title.

His management group have notified the European Boxing Board that he has been put forward to challenge for the title.

Edwards, the current British and European champion, is ranked number three in Europe.

The 33-year-old has only won 13 of his 29 professional fights, but defeated Usman Ahmed in his last fight at Fenton Manor, Stoke-on-Trent in May.

Meanwhile, Scott Lawton is preparing to step down a weight, to super-featherweight, after failing to win the British title at lightweight.

Lawton was defeated by John Murray in Wigan in June, fuelling reports that he was set to retire from the sport.

But he told BBC Radio Stoke: "I'm hoping to be boxing again at the end of August and I'll be moving down a weight, so hopefully I'll be getting a bit more success at super-featherweight.

"I'll be fighting on one of Ricky Hatton's bills. It's all looking good and I'm looking towards the future.

"We've got no opponent lined up yet, but I'm just looking forward to getting in there."
