Lindsay earns featherweight title

Paul Appleby comes under pressure from Martin Lindsay
Paul Appleby was outfought by Martin Lindsay in the Ulster Hall

Martin Lindsay scored a sixth-round stoppage against Paul Appleby at the Ulster Hall in Belfast to become the new British featherweight champion.

Lindsay, from Northern Ireland, forced the referee to step in and call a halt after catching the defending champion, 21, with a right hand over the top.

Appleby, from Scotland, started well, but Lindsay, 26, produced great combination work throughout the fight.

His left hooks proved particularly effective against his Edinburgh rival.

Appleby, who was previously unbeaten in 14 fights, landed with a good shot early in the first round, but Lindsay countered with a sharp right and three shots to the head.

Lindsay, who is now unbeaten in 14 fights, upped his work-rate in the second as Appleby's shots fell short.

Appleby finished on top in the third, keeping his guard high and connecting with body shots.

However, Lindsay produce a sustained attack in the fourth with Appleby on the ropes, before landing with a big over-the-top right in round six.

And with Appleby on the back foot, the referee quite rightly stopped the bout with the young boxer clearly unable to offer more resistance.

The two men were supposed to meet in a title eliminator last year and again in January, but Lindsay was forced to pull out with injuries on both occasions.
