Long road for Saunders - Warren

Saunders has started his pro career after fighting in the Olympics

Boxing promoter Frank Warren thinks it is too early to judge Hertfordshire boxer Billy Joe Saunders.

The 19-year-old marked his professional debut with a second-round win over Hungarian Attila Molnar in Birmingham on Saturday.

Warren told BBC Three Counties Radio: "It was an exciting debut fight for him, he was eager to please. Another three-counties star is born."

But he warned: "It is early days, he has got a long way to go."

The Olympian stopped his opponent one minute and 45 seconds into round two at the National Indoor Arena.

Warren continued: "It's all about learning from each fight, learning in the gym, he's got to get himself in the position where he is going to fight for a title in a couple of years. That's what we are working on, but he has got to get experience, experience, experience.

"Getting this one out of the way is obviously a nervous night. It's the same whatever you do, but as a professional boxer even more so on your debut. What I was pleased about was his temperament, I thought he handled himself really well."

we'll see where we go from there. If I didn't fancy that he could go that far, I wouldn't be involved

Warren is hoping that the middleweight will fight again in six to eight weeks, but was cautious about heaping too much pressure on the teenager, especially on talk of him being a possible world champion.

He said: "I don't want to put pressure on him at the moment, he has just got to learn his trade.

"He was good tonight. He fought for the first time without a vest on and we'll see where we go from there. If I didn't fancy that he could go that far, I wouldn't be involved."
