Bernard Dunne continued his recovery from his European title loss last year by beating Uruguayan Cristian Faccio in Castlebar on Saturday night.

The fight was stopped after seven of the scheduled 10 rounds after Dunne was badly cut in an accidental clash of heads and the referee called a halt.

Dunne was awarded the win as he led 70-65 on the judge's scorecard after dominating throughout the contest.

Lurgan welterweight Stephen Haughian beat Giammario Grassellini on points.

Grassellini had controversially defeated Haughian at the King's Hall in Belfast last year.

"I won convincingly but this was not the way I wanted to do it," said Dunne after his fight.

"He was a brave kid but I was enjoying it and I am disgusted that it had to end with a clash of heads," added the Irish super-bantamweight.

Dunne's career suffered a huge blow when he was knocked out in 86 seconds by Spain's Kiko Martinez 15 months ago.

However, his promoter Brian Peters is hoping that the re-established Dunne will challenge for a world title in 2009.
