Limond pulls out of New York bout

Scottish lightweight Willie Limond
Limond has reluctantly declined the offer to fight in New York

Willie Limond's dream of fighting Dmitriy Salita in Madison Square Garden has fallen through.

The Glaswegian had agreed to step up to light-welterweight on 8 November to support Joe Calzaghe's New York contest with Roy Jones Jr.

But Limond has reluctantly withdrawn after the Ukrainian's management team demanded the option of putting him on their next three shows if he won.

"I'm gutted we couldn't come to some sort of agreement," said Limond.

The clash was originally postponed after Calzaghe broke his hand, and Salita then courted WBA champion Andreas Kotelnik before returning his attention to Limond.

But the former Commonwealth lightweight champion felt he had no choice but to reject the chance to fight in New York.

"This has been going on since July, this fight has been on and off about 10 times," added the 29-year-old.

"They weren't taking any risks, I was taking all the risks.

"If they were that confident they were going to beat me, why did they need me to sign the options contract? It was a no-win situation."
