Thaxton angles for shot at Khan

Jon Thaxton
Thaxton is delighted to get another European title shot

Norwich boxer Jon Thaxton is hoping Amir Khan's defeat to Breidis Prescot last Saturday could bring the showdown between the British pair closer.

Thaxton, 34, is gearing up for his second shot at the European lightweight title against Juan Carlos Diaz Melero on 4 October.

He told BBC Radio Norfolk: "It will be hard to rebuild Amir Khan from this.

"I had a bit of a smile on my face [on Saturday] that's why Khan wouldn't face me, he would not fight a puncher."

Khan was beaten by knockout after just 54 seconds in fight with Breidis Prescott at Manchester's MEN Arena.

The Bolton fighter has previously avoided fighting Thaxton when he was made mandatory challenger to the British title, and again when Thaxton was declared the challenger to Khan's Commonwealth belt.

"I've got to be honest I wasn't really interested in the fight, the guy was ranked 109 in the world, I didn't think it was going to be much of a match, but obviously it was," he said.

Thaxton has made no secret of his desire to test himself against Khan before he retires, but he admits he is still not sure if it will ever happen.

"If I win the European there's every chance, who knows? Will he want a taste of it? I don't know."
