Hatton allays fears over fitness

Ricky Hatton v Juan Lazcano, IBO light-welterweight title
Date: 24 May Time: From 2130 BST Venue: City of Manchester Stadium
Coverage: Radio 5 Live and BBC Sport website

Hatton has targeted a Las Vegas rematch with Floyd Mayweather

Ricky Hatton says he is fully fit to face Juan Lazcano later this month after recovering from illness.

Hatton, 29, faces the Mexican at the City of Manchester stadium on 24 May but there had been fears he might have to pull out of the bout.

"A couple of weeks ago I had a virus but I just had to work around it and take a few days off," said Hatton.

"I'm fine now. It was blown out of proportion, mainly by my dad but the fight was never in jeopardy."

Victory against Lazcano would seal Hatton a contest with IBF champion Paulie Malignaggi in America.

"In a 12-week training camp you pick up all sorts of little problems," added Hatton. "When you get an illness four weeks before the fight, calling it off is not an option.

"It would be a different story if it was four days before."

The 29-year-old Briton has also targeted a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, which is likely to take place in Las Vegas.

"This fight could be my last in England," he said

"I think HBO and Golden Boy would like me to fight in the States to be honest, though there's nothing set in stone that says I have to."

Hatton has always maintained he will not fight well into his thirties and believes he has few goals left to achieve in the sport.

"Malignaggi at Madison Square Garden would be ideal should I beat Lazcano," he said. "Then I'd like another crack at Floyd.

"I'm not going to put a time limit on it, but then I've got to start to look for any more goals and ask 'are there any more goals that I want to achieve?'

"I will have topped the bill at City, at Madison Square Garden, won five world titles at two weight divisions, had the chance to put the record straight hopefully (against Mayweather) and then, well what more do you want, Ricky? What more is there to prove?"
