Green quits ring ahead of defence

Green says he has retired for the sake of his family

Australia's WBA light-heavyweight world champion Danny Green has announced his immediate retirement from boxing.

Green had been in a training camp for a mandatory defence against Argentina's Hugo Garay in Perth on 27 April.

But the 35-year-old (25-3, 22 KOs) said: "I am getting out on my terms, with my dignity and respect intact."

Green moved up from super-middleweight after losing to Aussie rival Anthony Mundine in 2006. He beat Stipe Drews to claim the WBA title last December.

Green, whose wife recently gave birth to a son, added: "I have made the decision of an intelligent man - looking to 25 years in the future."
