Jon Thaxton lost against Yuri Romanov
Norwich fighter Jon Thaxton failed in his attempt to add the European lightweight crown to his British title.
The 33-year-old was withdrawn by his corner after five rounds against the reigning champion Yuri Romanov from Belarus at the York Hall Bethnal Green.
Thaxton was badly cut and required stitches after a bruising encounter against a high-quality opponent.
"If my corner says it was the right decision, I'm happy, but I will be back defending my British title," he said.
"If I'd carried on it might have been career threatening, but in my eyes I'm still the best lightweight in Britain no matter what Amir Khan says."
Several hundred Norfolk fight fans made the journey to London to support the former WBF world champion. It was Thaxton's first defeat in 13 fights and his first as a lightweight.
He is expected to face Lee Meager in July for his third British title defence.
