Former IBF and WBC super featherweight world champion Arturo Gatti announced his retirement after losing to Alfonso Gomez in Atlantic City on Saturday.
Fighting at welterweight, the Canadian took a painful battering from his aggressive opponent and was stopped in the seventh round when on the canvas.
He said: "Hasta la vista, baby. I can't take this abuse anymore. I'm coming back - as a spectator. I'm retired."
Gatti won 40 fights with 31 knockouts and lost nine in his career.
Gomez stunned Gatti with a four-punch combination early on and went on to punish him with a relentless series of shots.
Pinning Gatti against the ropes in the seventh, Gomez landed a powerful right hand which put his opponent to the floor and the fight was stopped.
