Kevin McBride scored a fourth-round stoppage win over Byron Polley in Cleveland in his first fight since defeating Mike Tyson last June.
Kevin McBride has his sights on a world title fight
McBride kept on track for a possible shot at Russian Nikolai Valuev's WBA heavyweight crown later this year.
Polley was floored in the third round and the fight was halted in the next with a deep cut seeping out over the Missouri fighter's left eye.
The Monaghan fighter's next fight is due to be in Boston on 13 May.
The 32-year-old is scheduled to appear on the undercard of Ricky Hatton's world title fight.
"My timing was off a wee bit having not fought for 10 months, but Polley was never going to hurt me," said McBride afterwards.
"I am just glad to be back in action. Every fight I gain more experience and I am on the right road to winning a world title."
