Watson gets testimonial cheque
British PM Tony Blair hailed Watson's courage
Former boxer Michael Watson has been handed a financial boost from British Prime Minister Tony Blair at the House of Commons.
Watson, who has made a significant recovery from the injuries he sustained in a 1991 bout with Chris Eubank, received a cheque for his Testimonial Fund. More than £170,000 was raised from a star-studded benefit evening organised by boxing promoter Frank Warren. Blair, along with former British PMs John Major, Margaret Thatcher, Edward Heath and James Callaghan, signed a boxing glove which was auctioned on the night. After lunch Blair presented the cheque, saying: "I think it is a remarkable recovery. He's a very brave and courageous man." Watson was accompanied to the Commons by his mother Joan and uncle Joe who have cared for him since he was injured. "The money which has been raised will play a big part in helping to care for Michael and look after him in the future," said Watson's mother. "We are very grateful for what's been done." Watson added: "It's been a great day - very worthwhile." |
