Woods hopes for success
British boxer Clinton Woods

Sheffield fighter Clinton Woods will be counting on home support when he takes on world light-heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jnr in September.

Woods' promoter Dennis Hobson confirmed that the fight on 7 September will take place in Britain but a venue has still to be confirmed.

It will be the first fight outside the United States for the WBC, WBA and IBF champion who is rated by many as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.

Woods will have the most difficult 12 rounds of his career but he is not intimidated by his opponent's reputation.

He believes he has a genuine chance of winning the world light-heavyweight crown.

"What Roy Jones doesn't realise is that I am coming to my peak. He's left it that long to fight me that he'll now fight me at my best," said the 30-year-old.

The Sheffield boxer has been the WBC's number one contender for two years and has lost just once in his career.

He admits the frustration of waiting for his chance will not be allayed until both fighters step in to the ring in two months' time.

"Even now I've still got thoughts in my head about whether it will happen," said the former British, European and Commonwealth champion.

"I'm still worried that he's not going to get on the plane and come over here or that he's going to get injured.

"I won't believe the fight is going to happen until we're both gloved up in the changing rooms and walking towards the ring.

Woods's promoter Dennis Hobson believes his fighter can challenge Jones.

"We're getting Jones out of the States for the first time and I do believe Clinton has a genuine chance, especially on home soil," he said.

"I feel Jones, in his last half-a-dozen fights, has done just enough to win.

"He stated that Clinton's a nobody and they think they are coming over here on tour.

"We hope he does take Clinton lightly because he's in for a big shock."
