Witter vows to honour Watson

Sheffield's Junior Witter has vowed to do justice to ring hero Michael Watson when he takes on Ghana's Laatekwei Hammond for the vacant Commonwealth light welterweight title.

Witter headlines a Grosvenor House Hotel card on Tuesday night which pays tribute to the bravery of Watson, who almost died after losing to Chris Eubank in 1991.

I will do the audience full justice and I will win the Commonwealth belt

Watson collapsed shortly after being knocked out by Eubank and had to undergo surgery to treat a blood clot on his brain.

The former fighter is still wheelchair-bound but has made a remarkable recovery from an incident which looked set to claim his life.

"I though Michael was better that Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank, and that he would beat them all," said Witter.

"To be performing on a bill in front of him and other great celebrities who know what it's like to fight is just unbelievable.

"I will do them full justice and I will win the Commonwealth belt."

Hatton clash

Witter has lost just one of his 25 contests, when out-pointed by former IBF title holder Zab Judah on the undercard of Mike Tyson's clash with Lou Savarese in Glasgow over two years ago.

The unorthodox Brendan Ingle boxer will also bid to enhance his chances of taking on Manchester's WBU champion Ricky Hatton in a much-anticipated domestic showdown.

Promoter Frank Warren promised: "It's not very difficult to get two guys into the ring, however big they may be. But the problem is trying to make money for them.

"Recently in the States we had Costya Tsyzu fighting Zab Judah for three world titles. It was a great fight for the purists, but they fought in front of 2,500 people.

"I don't want to do that with Junior and Ricky. When they fight it could be as big as Michael Watson-Chris Eubank, or the Benn-Collins fights."
