Williams to fight veteran Witherspoon
Williams defended his British title against Julius Francis
British heavyweight champion Danny Williams will fight the veteran former world champion Tim Witherspoon on 8 September in Copenhagen.
The fight for the vacant WBU title is on the undercard of Mike Tyson's bout with Brian Nielsen. Williams successfully defended his British crown against Julius Francis at Wembley last month. Promoter Frank Maloney said: "It's a great opportunity for Williams. It will be the biggest stage he's performed on and the chance of greater exposure."
It was Bruno's first attempt to win a world crown, but "Terrible Tim" stopped him in the 11th round of that July 1986 fight. Witherspoon won the WBC crown by defeating Greg Page in 1984 but lost it in his first defence against Pinklon Thomas. Two years later, Witherspoon beat Tony Tubbs to win the WBA title before clashing with Bruno, but was beaten by James "Bonecrusher" Smith in his next defence. On a previous visit to Denmark in April 1999, Witherspoon was stopped in four rounds by Nielsen.
