A view from America
Felix 'Tito' Trinidad may yet face Jones Jr.
BBC Sport Online's Kevin Asseo looks at the US boxing scene and what could turn out to be the biggest fight of Roy Jones Jr.'s career.
Things are looking up for a meeting between Felix Trinidad and Roy Jones Jr. sometime in the near future. Trinidad, who recently moved up in weight to take part in Don King's middleweight unification tournament, is feeling comfortable with his new bulk and is not ruling out moving up to 168 lbs to meet Jones. That would require a step down to super middleweight for Jones, who has fought as a light heavyweight for the past several years.
Trinidad, by now no stranger to difficult, big-time fights, has expressed publicly his desire to take on Jones. But he must first get through the middleweight tournament. Trinidad faces William Joppy on 12 May and then fights Bernard Hopkins on 15 September, barring a surprise loss to Joppy. Jones and Arum have kept relatively quiet on the subject of Trinidad, hinting that WBO champ Joe Calzaghe might be a more likely opponent if Jones does indeed drop to 168 lbs. There is no doubt a meeting with Trinidad would be the biggest fight of Jones' career. The question is - does he want it? Holyfield-Ruiz III goes ahead
Ruiz's camp was vocal in saying they would boycott the fight if China did not release the captive American flight crew. Upon the release of the prisoners last week, however, everything appeared to be back on track. Ruiz, Holyfield and King will embark on a five-day publicity tour of China before the end of April. Tyson-Izon finally set Thankfully, we can finally stop speculating about Mike Tyson's next fight . The time and place are now official. His fight against lightly regarded heavyweight David Izon will happen on 2 June at the MCI Centre in Washington, D.C.
There were numerous possible locations for this bout, including Australia,
Malaysia and Germany, but in the end it was the stateside venue that won out.
"It's never simple when you make a fight involving Mike Tyson," said Tyson adviser Shelly Finkel. "This has gone back and forth so many times I think I have whiplash." King signs Tapia Don King has renewed an old acquaintance. He and four-time champion Johnny Tapia have agreed to a long-term deal that will make him Tapia's promoter for a second time. King handled Tapia previously from 1997 to 1999, but the pair split when Tapia thought King was taking too long to schedule new fights for him. Despite their earlier break-up, there are apparently no hard feelings. "I made more money with Don than I made with anybody, plus he takes me first class on everything," Tapia said. "I truly love Johnny, and it's great to have him back," King said upon signing the deal.
