Quiet man ready to make some noise
![]() Paulie Ayala (right) hammers Johnny Tapia
Texan Paulie Ayala says his reserved nature outside of the ring never stops him from giving his opponents a torrid time inside the ring.
"My will to fight burns deep within me - it's a bonfire right now," said Ayala recently. The World Boxing Association Bantamweight champion is considered one of the most improved fighters in boxing but he makes headlines only in the squared circle. Whereas Mike Tyson can earn millions for a non-title fight, Ayala will have to be content with $150,000 when he defends his title against Hugo Dianzo in Fort Worth.
The town happens to be Ayala's home. With a victory, he could get one step closer to his goal of a $1m fight with WBA Super-bantamweight champion Clarence 'Bones' Adams. That is a fight that will not take place in Fort Worth. "After I pay everyone - the promoters, the managers, the trainers, Uncle Sam - I want to net one million dollars one time." For a man who has twice beaten Johnny Tapia, the American star of the lower weights, such a reward is not too optimistic. But as his promoter and manager are quick to point out, the 30-year-old is not the usual hellraiser that boxing critics love so much. "Maybe he's too nice," said Top Rank's Bob Arum. "He doesn't beat up his wife, he doesn't do all the bad things. I can't understand it - I don't know."
"He's not raising cane, he's not out there calling people names. He's just a very respectful young man," said Ayala's trainer Henry Mendez. And Ayala, with a record of 33 wins and one loss doesn't want anything to change, except for more money per fight. "I've asked Leti to beat me up and spend a night in jail, but she won't agree to it," Ayala said, joking about his wife. "But seriously, this is who I am. This is me. People will just have to accept that."
