Young takes 400m glory
Jerome Young
America's Jerome Young clinched the men's 400m title at the World Championships in Paris.

Young stormed to victory in 44.5 seconds, with countryman Tyree Washington in second in 44.77 and Marc Raquil of France in third in a national record of 44.79.

Pre-race favourite Washington controlled the race down the back straight, but the 27-year-old Young powered into the lead going around the final bend and held on for victory.

Raquil surged late from the back of the field to claim bronze in front of his home crowd.

Jamaican-born Young was fourth four years ago in Seville when Michael Johnson set the world record of 43.18 while Washington added the silver to the bronze he took behind Johnson in Athens in 1997.

"This is a great moment for me," said Young. "I've waited for this and thought about it for a long time and it has come through - it's fantastic.

"We played a part in some of Mike's greatest races so it's great to finally get the medals ourselves."

Washington, the world indoor champion, went into the championships unbeaten in 11 races this year.

"It is my first loss this year and it hurts," he said. "I don't want to make any excuses but I am tired. I have been racing since January (when he won the world indoor title).

"But in fact after this race I am not even tired. That is the problem if you can finish a race and not be tired something is wrong but I am very happy that Jerome won as we are really good friends.

"I have got a silver medal I guess but it just wasn't to be."

Defending world champion Avard Moncur failed to qualify for the final, as did 2001 silver medallist Ingo Shultz.
