Ayhan stuns Szabo
Turkey's Sureyya Ayhan holds off Gabriela Szabo to win 1500m gold
Ayhan (right) led from start to finish

Turkey's Sureyya Ayhan produced a major surprise by outsprinting favourite Gabriela Szabo to win gold in the women's 1500m in Munich.

Romanian Szabo had been expected to add the European title to her world crown but failed to find the kick needed to overtake Ayhan at the finish.

Tatyana Tomashova of Russia held off Hungary's Judit Varga to take bronze with a time of 4:01.28.

Ayhan took the race out very quickly and went through the 400m mark in 60 seconds.

Szabo was well placed on the final lap but Ayhan dug deep to take victory in 3:58.79 - the fastest time in the world this year.
