![]() Hansen leaps to glory
Hansen needed a season's best to take victory
Britain's Ashia Hansen produced a superb final leap of 15 metres to claim gold in the women's triple jump at the European Athletics Championships. Hansen saved her best to last as she staged a repeat of her victory at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
Heli Koivula of Finland took the silver medal with 14.83m and Yelena Oleynikova of Russia won bronze with 14.54m.
Koivula had put the pressure on Hansen with a personal best in the first round. But the 31-year-old held her nerve to come up with a season's best with her sixth and final jump and take her first European gold. It was the first time Hansen had reached the 15m mark for three years. "She (Koivula) piled on the pressure in the first round and I was making mistakes because I was trying so hard," said Hansen. "I did one in the fifth round but it was a no jump. I knew it was in me and when the sixth round came I just had to relax and do exactly the same thing. "It gave me confidence knowing I could do it in the last round but I don't like doing it like that because it's too much to handle."
